You know something, fifikins? Apparently the Kennedys used only to whitewash/repaint the FRONTS of the buildings in their compound. I guess one only ever has to gussy up the bits other people can see -- while the rest slides into disrepair. I like to think there's a lesson in that for all of us... Love, R xxx

In Swedish coastal villages, you're required to paint your house white, to help mariners to find their way back to safe harbour in bad weather. (I guess this law predates lighthouses.) Poorer families would paint the landward sides of their houses with a cheaper, reddish-brown paint, while richer householder were white all over. You learn something every day, if you're not careful...

Fascinating comment from MFV! I always understood that the Kennedys' reason for painting only the front of their buildings was, purely and simply, penny-pinching parsimony rather than some sense of noblesse oblige to the maritime community! Now I'm left wondering if they were really just upholding some time-honoured Nordic tradition... x
